Director: Kevin Reynolds
Starring: Kevin Costner, Chaim Girafi, Rick Aviles, R.D. Call, Zitto Kazann
Genre: Drama
Studio: Universal Pictures   Release date: 1995   Rated: PG-13
Language (Country): English, French, Spanish (USA)
Summary: Traveller helps a woman and girl seek land in a futuristic sea covered Earth.
My Rating:
My Review: Directed by Kevin Reynolds (The Beast of War, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, The Count of Monte Cristo), with screenplay by Peter Rader and David Twohy. This movie stars Kevin Costner, Dennis Hopper, Jeanne Tripplehorn and others. While Waterworld may rate low on the scales of some critics, it rates up there near the top in my collection. I loved the story, the locations, the sets and the acting. While Kevin Costner may not be the best at Shakespearean prose and stage presence, he has an everyman appeal of honest reactions and earthy believability that many will never achieve. This movie has a refreshing and original story - In the far future, the polar ice-caps have melted (might be within the next ten years if you listen to the ridiculous 'Carbon Polition' pundits) and the human population is reduced to seagoing scavengers banding together to hold out against the roving bands of 'smokers' who hunt ceaselessly for 'go juice'. Dry land is a fairy tale and mankind is evolving into something that will emerge on the far side of this environmental disaster. The creation of alternate societies and desperate survival mesh quite well in a story that I've seen many times. There's a bit borrowed from the Mad Max survivalist theme, but overall this is a really good movie. I give it a 4 out of 5.

Director: Penelope Spheeris
Starring: Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Rob Lowe, Tia Carrere, Brian Doyle-Murray
Genre: Comedy
Studio: Paramount Pictures   Release date: 1992   Rated: PG-13
Language (Country): English, French (USA)
Summary: Two slacker friends try to promote their public-access cable show.
My Rating:
My Review: A Saturday Night Live skit - that actually worked well as a movie. The writting is Mike Myers, as Mike Myers and Dana Carvey play a couple of slackers with their own cable-access channel. These two loveable losers are 30 something slackers living in their parents basement, working minimum wage, rockin' out to heavy metal on the weekends. Their aspirations are small - a girl, guitar, cable access channel. When a sleezeball ad-man 'Discovers' their show they think 'They've hit the big time'. Little do they realize his nefarious plans to make them conform. To become a tool of the system, slaves to their sponsor - oh yeah, and steal Wayne's Crucial tot - Casandra, the hard rockin', kung-fu fightin', gorgeous girl. Wayne and Garth don't give up easily though. Suburban Aurora Illinois is populated with quirky characters and a campy script that doesn't pretend to be anything bigger than the lives of these two slackers. The laughs are plentiful, the dialog witty, concise and sometimes narrative. The camera work is done in a documentary style, the music is outstanding, and the plot is enjoyable. It's a combination sure to please. Rock on Wayne! Rock on Garth! (Note - Rob's World! has no affiliation with Wayne's World. Rock on Rob!)

Summary: Wayne is still living at home. He has a world class collection of name tags from jobs he's tried, but he does have his own public access TV show. A local station decides to hire him and his sidekick, Garth, to do their show professionally and Wayne & Garth find that it is no longer the same. Wayne falls for a bass guitarist and uses his and Garth's Video contacts to help her career along, knowing that Ben Oliver, the sleazy advertising guy who is ruining their show will probably take her away from him if they fail.

Director: Frank Coraci
Starring: Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Christine Taylor, Allen Covert, Matthew Glave
Genre: Comedy
Studio: Juno Pix   Release date: 1998   Rated: PG-13
Language (Country): English, French (Not on Lost in Space) (USA)
Summary: Robbie, the singer and Julia, the waitress are both engaged to be married but to the wrong people. Fortune intervenes to help them discover each other.
My Rating:
My Review: Definitely a Chick Flick - This romantic comedy stars Adam Sandler as Robbie Hart 'the Wedding Singer' and Drew Barrymore as the snow white waitress. The casting was outstanding. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore were excellent together and the supporting cast was just 'B' enough to work well with Sandler's odd style of acting and comedy (tastefully subdued in this movie). It's an 80s flashback (released in 1998) with excellent music, crazy hairdos and ridiculous period homages that keep the mood light. Adam Sandler plays the lead singer in a wedding band. His vocals are classic Sandler, but his stage personality makes up for the shortcomings in that department. Drew Barrymore plays a naive young waitress with dreams of a big wedding and a happy marriage. Unfortunately, both of them are engaged to incompatible mates. As they get to know each other better, they realize that they were made for each other. A happy ending follows. This sappy romantic comedy is a great date movie. Kim loves it, and I must admit, so do I. It brings back fond memories of the 80's, and I can't say no when she says "Let's watch 'The Wedding Singer'". Great music, throwback props and costumes, and a fantastic love story. I give it a 4 out of 5.
